Dosage, presence of infection and the severity of adverse reaction

From my research, there is a definite correlation between the dosage and severity of adverse reactions.

First of all, the most important factor is dosage PER DAY. Someone who takes 750mg/day of Levaquin for 1 week, is far more likely to suffer a more severe adverse reaction than someone who takes 250mg/day of Levaquin for 3 weeks. As the dosage per day increases, the danger of suffering a serious reaction exponentially rises.

Moreover, another interesting correlation involves the actual presence of a bacterial infection. In my opinion, this could be a serious risk factor for suffering from a serious adverse reaction. Almost all of the most severe adverse reactions have occured when the patient did not have a bacterial infection. However, it is unknown why this happens or whether this correlation is even significant. This could explain why in some clinical trials, adverse events are abnormally low, and also how many people who take the quinolones for a real infection are less likely to get a reaction. If you are suffering from a reaction, it is likely you had no bacterial infection in the first place. Check if you had an infection in the  first place, did you have culture test done, it could have been a virus. One explanation to this interesting correlation could lie in the fact that the drug mainly attacks bacterial DNA, however, it also has an affinity for human DNA. Therefore, since there is no bacteria to kill, the drug inadvertently acts on your own cells. This is another reason why it is important that quinolones should be reserved for drug resistant bacterial infections.

If you are suffering from any reaction, please report it in our Fluoroquinolone Adverse Reaction Report Form.

Hearing Loss on Levaquin

After 3-4 days on 500 mg of Levaquin for bronchitis, I experienced 80% hearing loss in my left ear which has not resolved. Does anyone know if there is any hope of recovery from this hearing loss or do I just have to suffer with it?

Exercise???

Has anyone been able to go jogging despite neuropathic pain? How do you ever know if you can safely resume that stuff?

excerise

After being so tire of the pain and fatigue, I decided just to take a short walk up my hill.  A short but steep hill.  I decided it would either kill me or cure me.  For 2 weeks after the walk, I coult not hardly walk.  I need to mention I have opted out of any other meds to help me at this point.  I take ibuprofen twice a day for the pain and drink lots of water.  After the two weeks of not being able to walk or sleep after this little jaunt up my hill.  My legs are better, not too many what I refer to as bee stings (sometimes even making me yelp like a dog), however, now spead to my torso, arms, hands and neck.  I just keep waiting for the day, this may just travel out of my body.  I took factive the latest release of this poison and only for 5 days.

I think that with the right dosage adverse reactions can not be! Although it all depends on the body!

Not wrong

The body does NOT contain "20 x more microbes than it does human cells". If it did, then you would be dead from an infection and rotting away. Where the heck did you get that info from?

Wrong

"Therefore, since there is no bacteria to kill, the drug inadvertently acts on your own cells."

The human body contains 20 x more microbes than it does human cells. I did have an active infection and got hit with this reaction. The idea that you have to have an infection to have low risk of side effects is nothing but speculation, and there is zero evidence to back any of this up.

Dosage

I was on a high dose  (500mg twice a day) for a week for a prostate infection that I am not convinced was bacterial.  I started feeling terrible including an ulnar nueropathy and now constant pain in my legs. This was around christmas and the symptoms started in mid January.  I seem to be having 'intermediate level symptoms' - that is very uncomfortable but I can deal with them.
